As it stands at the moment and bearing in mind we are six points behind United with our hopes of Arsenal doing us a favour this weekend fading fast, Chelsea look good to finish second in the Premier League behind United.
I think if any of us was offered the opportunity to finish second a month ago we all would of taken it right there and then so the fact that we have picked ourselves up and got our act together in recent weeks is testament to the players, to Carlo and the staff at the club.
Jimmy Greaves once said “Football is a funny old game!” and this season more so than any before. We will have to wait and see what happens in our remaining games but it’s a big ask for us to win the league now, but like Jimmy said you never know!
If we do finish second then it will be the first time in six seasons that we will finish a season without winning a trophy and some people will see it as a failure. Everyone is entitled to their opinions of course but it’s a sign of just how far we have come in recent years and some people need to be reminded of the fact at times.
It wasn’t so long ago that to finish in the top four would be a fantastic achievement for the club and to compete for the title and in the Champions League was just a pipe-dream. For the past six seasons we have been competing season in, season out and we all have become accustomed to the level we have reached and sustained ever since Roman came to the club.
We do however, have to remember the issues we have faced before and during the course of the season that has taken us to where we find ourselves now. It’s important to point out the amount of experienced players that left the club back in the summer that were never replaced. We have seen numerous youngsters involved in the first team squad and given first team football in a range of competitions as the intention was to bring players through. We have seen our first team squad suffer with the amount of injuries they have had to face to important key players more than any other season I can remember and to make matters worse, injuries at the same time.
We have seen our coaching staff change during the course of the season for one reason or another. We have seen Roman Abramovich shock the world once more with two high profile, big money signings back in January to bolster the ranks at the club and take time in settling in. We have seen the manager struggle to try to work out the best way to accommodate everyone now available to him on a match day until he found the right balance to be 4-3-3 once more.
Finally, we have seen an unprecedented about of media speculation and coverage focused on our manager and the “apparent” situation at the club since the turn of the year. To Ancelotti’s credit, he has continued with his work and got on with things from day to day right to where we are now.
So I want to remind you that if we do finish second this season despite everything that has happened, what we have had to deal with and considering how we felt after losing 3-0 at home to Sunderland and looking at that scoreboard, it’s a fantastic achievement and although we would have let our grip on the title go for now, it could have been a whole lot worse.
